The service that paid back!

The sisters came home early because their appointments cancelled.  So they wanted to do service….they offered to go through all my old clothes to decide which I was going to keep and which would go to charity!

So they served me…and in return they got to keep a bunch of things that I was going to get rid of…so I got to serve them!!

I deserve a medal

I covered the sunbeam class today…I really think I deserve a medal.  I would sooner cover ANY other class, but I find the sunbeams SUPER challenging.  It was fun, but I was very glad when it was over!

One of the girls kept calling me "grandma", she didn't even correct herself - she just kept calling me grandma. I feel like I should include her in my will!!

Music

The sisters asked me to put some music on their USB sticks today - they aren't allowed to use the computer, so it was a pleasure to help them with that!

Oh, and I bought a fish for the sunbeams class tomorrow.  The lesson is about fish, and I thought it would be cool to have a real one there!

Lunch for the girls

I provided lunch for the sister missionaries today - it was easy, I didn't even cook it for them, they just helped themselves; but I know they are grateful that they get to eat whatever they want from my house.

I also think I will start adding photo's to this blog where possible going forward.  At the end of the year I will get this printed up as a reminder.  I also need to be more creative about service that I offer.  I think that will be easier at weekends rather than when I'm at work :)

….and then, a service opportunity landed in my lap this evening.  Carter Hudson called and asked if I could pick him up from drivers ed and take him home, because his mum and dad were working in the temple at the time he would be ready.  I really love it when people ask for help!

Day 40

This was an interesting one.  I gave my friend a ride to the Pathway meeting tonight, but she mentioned that she had to stay an extra hour because she had a singing practice with a small vocal group she sings with.  I offered to stay, I figured I could do some homework while I waited.  So I went into the room where they were practicing and was about to just do some work….Janis (the director) invited me to join the group (I have sung with her many times) - so I did!  This service turned out to be a great blessing for me!

I think I am going to start putting titles rather than day numbers from here on.

Day 39

Today was a bit of a stretch….I don't think I really did anything; but I did take the sisters garbage out.  Weak service at best :(

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Day 38

I completed a piece of work on the separation process that one of OD specialists was working on.  She had lots of other critical things on her plate and was grateful that I could finish things up for her :)

Monday, March 10, 2014

Day 37

First day back at work for 2 weeks.  After work I went to return some trousers and received a store credit for the return.   I gave the store credit to a friend - she was very grateful :)

Sunday, March 9, 2014

Day 36

Sunday is always a good opportunity for service.  Today someone asked me if I could cover her sunbeams class next week.  I willingly accepted although I must confess the sunbeams scare me a little :)  Last time I covered this class I realized I needed to prepare much more to keep them engaged for a full 50 minutes :)

Saturday, March 8, 2014

Day 35

First full day back to normal.  With the help of the sister missionaries, I dug out a bunch of British things for a friend who's son is going to the UK on a mission and she wanted to decorate her house for his open house….she loved the stuff :)

Friday, March 7, 2014

Day 34

Flew home today, it's so nice to be back.  I received a lot of service today.  My best friend picked me up from the airport and settled me in at home, my visiting teacher bought some groceries for me to save me having to go out.
I lent some dresses to my best friend (I'm glad she asked otherwise I wouldn't have done anything today!)

Thursday, March 6, 2014

Day 33

We went to a mall in Puerto Vallarta today and I bought juice for everyone

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Day 32

I actually was planning to move to a hotel today; but the other ladies asked me to stay at the house - so I did (I don't think this counts, because I think I did it begrudgingly!)

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

Day 31

Left hospital and stayed in a house close by with some other patients, we went shopping and I bought enough fruit juice and water for everyone

Monday, March 3, 2014

Day 30

Still in hospital…talked with the other patients and tried to give some support

Sunday, March 2, 2014

Day 29

I think I failed today - just recovering from surgery, and I'm sure I could have found something if I tried hard enough…I just didn't :(

Saturday, March 1, 2014

Day 28

In Mexico for surgery. In a hospital room all day, I don't think service even crossed my mind - except that maybe I was exceptionally forgiving to the nurse who seemed to struggle with my IV :)

Friday, February 28, 2014

Day 27

Came home briefly before flying to Mexico, while I was home I set out a plate of goodies for the sisters and the cleaning ladies

Thursday, February 27, 2014

Day 26

We had a big town hall for our Houston business today; The communications people couldn't attend so I offered to take note of the questions and answers, and sense the mood of the occasion for them

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Day 25

Arranged for dinner with a former employee and client…which was harder than you'd think because I was on a complete liquid diet and really just watched everyone eat (but it was delightful company!)

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Day 24

I was on a course today - I coordinated the course photo and lent my camera to the person taking it - a bit of a stretch really :)

Monday, February 24, 2014

Day 23

Went to Houston; arranged to have lunch with some colleagues who I hadn't seen for a while!

Sunday, February 23, 2014

Day 22

I sang in Church AND covered a primary class….a busy day :)

Saturday, February 22, 2014

Day 21

A couple of fun things today;  I got to take my friend shopping for stuff for her new apartment, she was concerned about the cost of stocking up on everything, so we went to WalMart and I got her a bunch of things for her bathroom and kitchen…that was kind of fun!

Also I hosted a "guess who's coming to dinner" event for our ward…I catered for 8 people; the Goertzens, the Lows, Marcie Nielsen, the sisters and me…that was also fun!

Friday, February 21, 2014

Day 20

I got to take Adelle out to dinner tonight, with Megan.  Ty and Michael were also going to come but had to pull out at the last minute.  It was still fun though!

Thursday, February 20, 2014

Day 19

I let my team watch the Olympics (women's hockey) at the office today….I guess that was a little self serving!

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Day 18

I need to make sure that I type these up every day, otherwise it's too easy to forget!  Today I reviewed a resume for a girl in the ward, and gave her some tips to make the resume stronger!

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Day 17

I'm struggling to think of what I did today, I went to lunch with a friend, but she paid, so does that mean it's not service?  I guess it does, but I think that's all I have for today :(

Monday, February 17, 2014

Day 16

I bought a bunch of things for the sisters to build a graham cracker temple for family night for new members of the ward.  I think I got enough stuff to build 50 graham cracker temples….I hope they have a lot of family nights with new members or investigators!

Sunday, February 16, 2014

Day 15

I subbed for a primary teacher today, I got to teach the 8 year olds - it was actually quite a lot of fun!!

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Day 14

Josh went home today :(

On the way to the airport we drove through Tim Hortons for a late lunch - I paid for the guy behind me….he practically chased me down afterwards to say thank you (It's supposed to be anonymous!)

Friday, February 14, 2014

Day 13

Happy Valentines Day -  I was in receipt of lots of service today - anonymous cookies delivered, not-so-anonymous cupcakes, and some more not-so-anonymous cookies!

I took my friend to the movies - or did she take me?  We both paid for her son and my nephew to go to the Hitmen hockey game.  I bought a hockey shirt for both of them and sweatshirts for my nieces

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Day 12

Gave my friend a ride to the Pathway gathering - am I allowed to count that every week?  I guess I make the rules, so I will make it count!

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Day 11

I helped Josh get ready for his EMR exam….he's way smarter than me!

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Day 10

It's easy when Josh is staying!

I took him out to dinner at Joey's tonight - lovely evening!

Monday, February 10, 2014

Day 9

Picked up a colleague (Kathryn) that is visiting from the UK....it was only a few blocks from the office, but it's -25C outside :)

Sunday, February 9, 2014

Day 8

Chuck Saunders gave a talk about charity today, it was thought provoking.  He suggested that we can do small acts of kindness every day, for example...shovelling a driveway, writing a note, baking cookies, or as his MTC companion did...shine his shoes every day.  This is very much in line with what I'm trying to do with this 365 days of service blog.  What I found interesting is that chuck is still talking about  the kindness his MTC companion did...and this is 15 years later!

I want to be kinder :)

Today's act of kindness:  Kathy Steele texted me an hour before church and asked if I would teach her primary class...I, of course, accepted.

My initial reaction was actually disappointment that I would miss Sunday school and relief society, but I caught myself and responded by thanking her for asking me, I know I will enjoy it!

During my lesson, I asked the primary girls to each share one act of kindness they have done recently...it was delightful to hear such good things that thee girls are involved with.

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Day 7

Today I took Josh to see some apartments in Calgary, we drove through Tim Horton's and I paid for the car behind me.  It was nice that they caught up with me and thanked us - and they were so happy (it cost me all of $2.50!)

Friday, February 7, 2014

Day 6

Took Josh out to Ruth's Chris for a nice dinner to celebrate passing his week1 test!

Thursday, February 6, 2014

Day 5

Today I gave a ride to the gathering to someone from my ward that was going to the other pathway group (too easy :))

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Day 4

One of my clients at work is an executive from Beijing - he is a delightful man, but his English isn't great.  I unsuccessfully tried to explain how to complete the year end performance reviews for his team, but it didn't seem to land very well.  FInally I decided I would do it for him and just let him tweak it.  The challenge was to say I what I think HE would say, so I had to forget all my good English and try to sound like I was speaking in my second language.  It was actually quite fun, and I quite enjoyed it!

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Day 3

Today's little acts of service:

1.  Bought Starbucks for some of my team that were having an early meeting in the office next to me
2.  Helped Josh with his memorization for a test

I need to up the ante...this is not stretching enough :)

Monday, February 3, 2014

Day 2

Day 2

Today I bought lunch for one of the girls on my team at work - it didn't really feel like service, because I enjoyed doing it; but I don't think it's a pre-requisite for service to be a sacrifice!

The 2nd service was a bit more of a sacrifice.  My nephew Josh is staying with me at the moment, and he needed to get some printing and binding done for the course he is on.  He didn't want to really impose, but I could tell he wanted it as soon as possible.  I called Staples and sent the book (346 pages) for printing.  That's not a sacrifice, but having to wait until 9pm to pick it up means that I won't get to bed until 9.30....and if you know me...you know that's a sacrifice :)  BUT, again, it's a pleasure to do it!

Day 1

I accepted an assignment with my BYU-I Pathway program to complete one act of service a day for the duration of this semester.  I wonder if I could do this every day for the rest of the year.

I have my photo blog, which will be separate, but I think this will be much more worthwhile!  Every day is a lot of days, but I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.  This is really for my personal benefit, to publish this widely would feel like boasting....but really I want this to be top of mind so that I don't just get caught up my day to day work without considering serving others....I plan for the posts to be brief - but this first one is a little more in-depth:

Today's act of service was to accept an invitation to cover a primary class for Janice McCrimmon on Feb 23rd, so maybe I'll get to count this one twice!

This is the beginning of the practicum:

King Benjamin said “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God” Mosiah 2:17.  This is such a frequently quoted scripture, and I think it helps us see into the soul of King Benjamin.  He was a kind, thoughtful and inspirational leader.  I believe that there is great power in the principle of service.  It takes us outside of ourselves and helps us to become selfless and Christlike.
I feel that I have a privileged life, and with privilege comes responsibility.

M Russell Ballard talked of service in his Conference address in April 2011.  He said “It is only when we love God and Christ with all of our hearts, souls, and minds that we are able to share this love with our neighbors through acts of kindness and service—the way that the Savior would love and serve all of us if He were among us today.”
He goes on to explain that there are opportunities to serve others in our home, Church and our communities.
President Monson is a great example of service.  He has lived a life filled with humble service to others.  We often hear him tell stories of the widows that he would serve when he was a young bishop.  He said: “The needs of others are ever present, and each of us can do something to help someone.
“… Unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives” (Thomas S Monson “What Have I Done for Someone Today?” Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2009, 85).
This is a powerful statement, but epitomizes the life that President Monson has lived.
My personal experience with service has been that I service is sometimes more about the giver than the receiver.  I also think that it is sometimes easier to give service than it is to receive it.  I wonder if that has something to do with pride; we have become so independent that some would consider it a sign of weakness when seeking help from others.  I recently had the opportunity to offer a small service to a sister in the ward, she wanted to repay my service with an act of service of her own.  My first reaction was to decline the offer, and I remember saying “Oh, I couldn’t let you do that for me”  I could visibly see her countenance drop; and I recalled how wonderful I felt in offering service to her.  I retracted my resistance and accepted the offer willingly.  What a blessing that was to both of us!
Members of the Church have a unique opportunity to serve as missionaries.  What a blessing it has been to hear that there are now over 80,000 missionaries serving throughout the world.  I am preparing to serve a mission when I retire in 7 years time, but there is much that I can do to support the missionary cause now.  We have about 10 missionaries serving from our community, and even the simple act of an email or a letter could help to lift the soul of a struggling missionary!
The opportunities to serve are almost endless – and we are always blessed for our efforts in this area.
